Talk America
Talk America Holdings started on the national stage, but now it's rushing to go local. The company (formerly Talk.com, and before that, Tel-Save.com) originated as a long-distance provider but in 2000 began reselling local service through lease agreements with incumbent carriers. In response to regulatory changes, it has been building its own local networks (primarily in Michigan) and moving customers off of incumbent carriers' lines. Although it operates throughout the US, Talk America has decided to halt marketing efforts outside of areas where it has its own network facilities. The company sells its bundled local and long-distance services primarily to residential and small business customers.
