DirecTV
DIRECTV takes television direct to the masses. Known as Hughes Electronics until 2004, the DIRECTV Group operates DIRECTV, the largest US direct broadcast satellite (DBS) provider, ahead of #2 EchoStar Communications' DISH Network. The DIRECTV Group provides service to about 14 million customers in the US and more than 1.5 million in Latin America. The company has deals with Verizon and BellSouth to sell voice service, and Internet access is also offered through Hughes Network Systems (once a subsidiary and now a joint venture with SkyTerra). News Corp. acquired a 34% stake in DIRECTV, which it transferred to its Fox Entertainment Group, and that's who currently holds the one-third stake.
