BellSouth
BellSouth is growing out of its Southern roots. The Baby Bell is the incumbent local exchange carrier (ILEC) for nine states from Louisiana to Kentucky. In spite of a decrease in demand for local wireline services, the company has more than 21 million access lines in service and is the country's #3 local phone company (behind Verizon and AT&T Inc., formerly known as SBC Communications). BellSouth owns 40% of Cingular Wireless, the #1 mobile phone operator in the US after its acquisition of rival AT&T Wireless (former market leader Verizon Wireless is now #2). BellSouth had teamed up with SBC to form Cingular Wireless.
